Winter TLC for Your Compact Tractor: Essential Service Tips
Winter TLC for Your Compact Tractor: Essential Service Tips
Posted by Joel Prince
After a busy Summer, it is important to keep your compact tractor running smoothly! Here are some essential service tips to keep your compact tractor in top-notch condition during the winter months:
1. Fluid Check and Change
Start your winter service regimen by checking and changing essential fluids. Ensure that the engine oil, hydraulic fluid, and coolant are at the recommended levels. If these fluids are due for a change, now is the perfect time. Fresh fluids contribute to smooth operations, even in chilly conditions.
2. Battery Maintenance
Cold temperatures can be particularly harsh on batteries. Begin by inspecting the battery for signs of wear or corrosion. I you spot your battery is leaking, replace as soon as your able and handle the old battery with the appropriate eye and hand protection.
Clean the terminals and, if applicable, disconnect the battery or keep it on a trickle charger to maintain its charge. A fully charged battery is key to a swift start when you're ready to bring your tractor back into service. if you spot your battery is leaking, replace as soon as your able and handle the old battery with the appropriate eye and hand protection
3. Fuel System Considerations
If you’re storing your compact tractor, stale fuel can lead to starting issues come spring. Add a fuel stabilizer to the tank to prevent fuel breakdown. Run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilizer circulates through the entire system. If possible, store your compact tractor with a nearly empty fuel tank.
4. Grease Moving Parts
Give your compact tractor some extra care by greasing all the moving parts. This includes joints, pivot points, and any components specified in your tractor's manual. Greasing ensures that these parts stay lubricated, preventing rust and corrosion during the winter break.
5. Tire Inspection and Maintenance
Inspect the tires for proper inflation and wear. Cold temperatures can lead to reduced tire pressure. Ensure the tires are inflated to the recommended levels, as this not only provides better traction but also contributes to the overall health of your compact tractor.
6. Store Indoors if Possible
If you have indoor storage, consider housing your compact tractor in a garage or shed. This protects it from the harsh winter elements, preventing snow, ice, and freezing temperatures from taking a toll on critical components.
When storing your machine, don’t forget to inspect your mower/compact tractor for mice/ rodent presence before storing for winter and before returning to work in the spring! Nests and rodents and cause damage to critical components leading to downtime when you need to return your machine to work. Fresh Cab Rodent repellent is a helpful product for deterring mice during storage!
7. Check the Coolant
Inspect the coolant to ensure it's at the right level and mix. An adequate concentration of antifreeze in the coolant prevents freezing, safeguarding your tractor's engine against winter's chill.
8. Protect Exposed Components
Use insulated covers or wraps to protect exposed components from the biting cold. This is especially important for hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and other vulnerable parts. Shielding them from winter's harsh conditions helps prevent damage and ensures they're in optimal condition when you bring your compact tractor back into service.
9. Professional Inspection
Consider scheduling a professional service inspection before winter sets in. Certified technicians can conduct a comprehensive check, identify potential issues, and address them proactively. A winter service special can save you from more significant problems down the road.
