Tractor Won’t Start in Cold Weather? Here’s What to Do!
Posted by Shenna Peters
When temperatures plummet, equipment can struggle to start and stay running and your John Deere tractor is no exception. Cold weather is tough on diesel engines, and issues like fuel gelling, weak batteries, and cold start system failures can leave you frustrated when you need your equipment most. If your John Deere tractor won’t start in cold weather, here are a few ideas on how to detect and troubleshoot the problem, get back up and running, and know when it’s time to let your LandPro Service Department give you a hand.
1. Common Causes of Hard or No Start
Fuel Gelling (Diesel)
Winter temps can cause diesel fuel to thicken, restricting flow through the filters and lines. John Deere tractors equipped with advanced fuel systems are especially sensitive to gelling when:
- The engine cranks but won’t start
- Visual inspection of fuel filter appears to be plugged
- The tractor starts and stalls
Weak Battery in Cold Temps
When you leave your tractor outside with the battery installed in cold weather, the low temperatures can reduce the battery’s power and starting ability. Cold weather slows the chemical reactions inside the battery. This means it can’t deliver the same level of energy it would in warmer conditions. If the battery becomes discharged and stays cold for long periods, it can freeze, causing internal damage and shortening its lifespan. Keeping the battery on a minder or protected from extreme cold helps ensure it is ready to start your tractor when you need it.
Cold, Thick Engine Oil
Tractor engines are designed to run on specific cold-weather oil weights, and using the wrong viscosity can slow internal movement and affect starting ability. Weight is shown as a “W” rating, like 0W-40 or 5W-30, the number before the “W” indicates how well the oil moves in weather—the lower the number, the thinner the weight. Using the correct cold-weather oil weight helps your engine turn over smoothly and get proper lubrication during winter starts.
Glow Plug / Intake Air Heater Issues
A glow plug is a small device used in diesel engines to help them warm up and start in cold weather. When you turn the key, the glow plug quickly heats up and warms the air inside the engine’s cylinders. Intake air heaters makes it easier for diesel fuel to ignite, allowing the engine to start smoothly. Once the engine is running, the glow plugs turn off and the engine heat takes over. If these systems aren’t heating properly, the engine won’t reach combustion temperature and the engine won’t start.
2. DIY – Easy Fixes
Warm the Tractor or Use a Block Heater
A block heater is an electric device that warms your engine before you start your tractor. It heats the engine block and the fluids inside, making the engine turn over easier and it help it start quickly. By warming things up, a block heater reduces strain on the battery and engine, especially on days below freezing. If your John Deere is equipped with a block heater, plug it in for 30–60 minutes. This warms the engine, restores diesel flow, and dramatically improves cold starts. Block heaters can be purchased separately from your tractor.
Treat the Fuel
Adding an anti-gel additive to prevent or resolve cold weather gelling at every fill up. If you suspect gelled fuel, use an emergency de-gel product and replace the fuel filter once it has thawed.
Check and Charge the Battery
- Clean corroded terminals
- Test voltage: 12.6V or higher is ideal
- Charge/replace old batteries
If your battery is more than 4–5 years old, it may no longer meet the demands of starting a diesel engine.
Use the Correct Oil
Switch to the oil grade recommended by John Deere for winter: such as 0W-40, 5W-40, or premium synthetic blends.
Cycle the Glow Plugs
Turn the key and wait for the glow plug indicator light to come on and then go out. You can do this a couple of times to help warm the engine before you start it.
3. Winter Prep for Reliability of Your Tractor
Keep your tractor ready for winter weather, by:
- Using a winter-blend diesel fuel or adding anti-gel at each fill-up
- Replace old fuel filters
- Keep the fuel tank full to reduce condensation
- Install a battery maintainer for tractors stored in unheated barns
- Inspect your glow plugs or intake heater system
Ensure your tractor runs when you need it most. A little preparation goes a long way.
4. When to Schedule Service at Your Local LandPro Store
Some issues require trained technicians, especially on newer models with advanced emissions and fuel systems. Schedule service if:
- Your tractor repeatedly gels despite additives
- Glow plug lights stay on
- Cranking is strong but no start
- The tractor starts, then loses power when engaged or stalls
- Machine will not crank at all
